Philosophy

Our philosophy

We pride ourselves on our philosophy of PQP - People, Quality and Profit. We know everyone says that people are their greatest asset, but we genuinely mean it. And we can prove it.

Every employee is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. We've also made substantial investments in the working environment with excellent training and development for everyone. Quality is a way of life for us. This does not start and stop with the product, we only recruit, buy, develop and invest in the best - people, machinery and technology. After all, you need the best to produce the best. The profit we make provides stability, the means to reinvest in our people and grow the business. Our double digit year on year growth rate, since our inception, is proof that we're succeeding and it works.

We believe that it is only our strong culture that can set us apart from our competitors, and that only by maintaining our culture can we deliver quality, value and service to our customers day in, day out.

All our people have the task of ensuring that PQP is at the heart of everything we do, and that our concerns for People, Quality and Profit are balanced. A great 'people' and 'quality' business that has not got the 'profit' cannot survive, and the Samworth family does not want to own a profitable business which is not passionate about both its people and the quality of its products.

The principles

People

We can only succeed through our people. We focus on encouraging each person to fully develop their potential through training, support and by creating new opportunities for them. The Samworth Academy was created to promote a learning culture that allows all our staff to develop.

Dignity and respect for everyone is core to our philosophy towards our people, and we conduct an annual cultural survey in each business to monitor this. Our 'people' measures are monitored at each Board meeting and form a key part of our Budgets and Four Year Plans. We treat people as people, not as employees.

Our approach to people includes offering the best benefits we can afford, ensuring good communication and involvement for all our staff, and developing an atmosphere of openness and trust that really gets the best out of people.

Quality

Quality is and always has been a way of life for the Samworth Brothers. It is reflected in everything we do.

Our modern facilities are designed to be both state-of-the-art and to incorporate genuine craft skills forgotten by most other producers. All our companies pride themselves on using only the finest and freshest ingredients, allowing us to concentrate on the premium end of the markets we supply.

Testimony to our principles on quality and attention to detail has led to the success of flagship brands, such as Ginsters, and the number of quality based awards that have been won both by our sites and our products.

Quality is as much about environment and state of mind as it is about ingredients and processes. The key for us is to ensure that everyone in the business is passionate about doing the best they can.

Profit

We need to be profitable to pay for investment, growth and innovation for our customers and consumers.

The profit motive is strong at Samworth Brothers, and the desire to reduce waste and be as efficient as we can ensures that we offer our customers value for money for the quality foods we produce.

Every person in each business in the group is encouraged to be responsible for profit. We operate a profit share scheme that every permanent employee is a member of. Each of the businesses adopts a policy of continual improvement aimed at challenging efficiencies, whilst always ensuring product quality continuously improves.

Any business can get either the 'people' right, or the 'quality' right, or the 'profit' right in isolation. The challenge for Samworth Brothers and its businesses is to get all three aspects of our culture right at the same time.
